Chapter Six

At eight-thirty the next night Erica opened the door to Vonnie Connors, the estate agent. Fortunately Will was already in bed.

“I know it’s late to call,” Vonnie apologized. She was an attractive brunette in her late thirties, charming and relentless. Without waiting for an invitation she stepped inside. “But if you counter-sign tonight the for-sale sign up can go up first thing in the morning.”

Erica kept standing at the open door. “But we’re not actively selling until after January 5, remember? Sue and Tom Gordon were a one-off. And I’ve decided not to tell Will until after Christmas.”

The other woman lifted salon-shaped brows. “Didn’t Jeff talk to you?”

“Talk to me about what?” She’d been out most of the day.

Vonnie sighed. “Oh dear. I just assumed since he faxed the agents’ contract through from Dubai that he’d got hold of you…maybe I should wait until you two have had a chance to talk.”

Erica looked at the document in the agent’s hands. Even though she knew it killed cats, curiosity got the better of her. “Come in, Vonnie, and tell me what’s going on.”

Flashing a best-friends-forever smile Vonnie was in the lounge and seated on the couch before Erica could say “foreclosure.” This agent had told the Gordons that Jeff had cheated on her, Erica didn’t offer her any refreshments.

“It was only when I was talking to my kids about bringing them to Light-Up this Sunday that the penny dropped,” Vonnie began. “I apologize for not thinking of it before.”

Erica said cautiously, “Think of what? And what does this have to do with Jeff signing contracts?”

“Like I told your ex, you’ll have hundreds of people—potential vendors—viewing the street’s Christmas lights. He agreed it would be madness not to take advantage of that and put up a for-sale sign.”

Unfortunately, the estate agent was right. Still Jeff should have cleared it with her first. Come to think of it, Vonnie should have cleared it with her first. Instead of sneaking behind her back to the person most likely to say yes. The person with no home to lose.

Erica stood up, gestured to the hall. “I’ll phone you when I’ve talked to Jeff.”

As Vonnie walked past she waved the contracts playfully. “Or you could sign now?”

“I don’t think so.” Go home to your nice safe husband, your nice safe house and your probably neglected kids. Erica went to open the door.

Vonnie put out a hand and stopped her. “Look, Erica,” she said seriously. “I know this is hard for you. I recently got divorced myself.” Seeing Erica’s surprise she pulled a face. “Yeah, there are a lot of us. And telling your kids…well, I understand why you’re putting it off. But this way, you’ll get the very best price, and trust me, every penny counts. I’m not suggesting this to help Jeff, I’m suggesting it to help you.”

For a moment the two women looked at each other, then Erica took the papers and signed them on the hall table.

“You’re sure?” But there was relief in Vonnie’s voice.
